Milton quickly intensified into a Category 4 hurricane on Monday, moving toward major population areas in Florida, including Tampa and Orlando. This development poses a significant risk of a hazardous storm surge in Tampa Bay and raises concerns about possible mass evacuations, occurring less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene caused severe flooding along the coast.

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, the storm is anticipated to maintain its current intensity for the next few days. Hurricane Helene also made landfall as a Category 4 in northern Florida. A hurricane warning has been issued for certain regions of Mexico’s Yucatan state, while much of Florida’s west coast is under hurricane and storm surge watches.

Milton exhibited maximum sustained winds of 150 mph (240 kph) while traversing the southern Gulf of Mexico, according to the hurricane center. The storm's center is projected to make landfall on Wednesday in the Tampa Bay region and may maintain hurricane status as it progresses through central Florida toward the Atlantic Ocean. This trajectory would primarily protect other states that were severely impacted by Helene, which resulted in a death toll of at least 230 individuals along its route from Florida to the Appalachian Mountains.
Meteorologists have issued warnings regarding a potential storm surge of 8 to 12 feet (2.4 to 3.6 meters) in Tampa Bay. They also indicated that flash flooding and river flooding may occur due to anticipated rainfall of 5 to 10 inches (13 to 25 centimeters) across mainland Florida and the Keys, with localized areas possibly receiving up to 15 inches (38 centimeters) of rain.
DeSantis emphasized the need to bypass bureaucratic obstacles, stating, “We must focus on getting the job done.”

In 2017, approximately 7 million residents were advised to evacuate Florida as Hurricane Irma approached, resulting in congested highways, extensive waits at gas stations, and some evacuees pledging never to evacuate again.

Drawing from experiences gained during Irma and other storms, Florida is now pre-positioning emergency fuel for gasoline vehicles and charging stations for electric vehicles along evacuation routes, as noted by Kevin Guthrie, executive director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, on Sunday.

“We are preparing for what is likely to be the largest evacuation since Hurricane Irma in 2017,” Guthrie stated.

On Monday morning, Milton was located about 150 miles (240 kilometers) west of Progreso, Mexico, and approximately 735 miles (1,185 kilometers) southwest of Tampa, moving east-southeast at a speed of 8 mph (13 kph), according to the hurricane center.

DeSantis extended his state of emergency declaration on Sunday to cover 51 counties, advising Floridians to brace for potential power outages and disruptions. He urged residents to ensure they have a week's supply of food and water and to be prepared to evacuate.

In the St. Pete Beach area, where Helene's storm surge caused significant flooding to homes and businesses, lifeguards took action on Monday by removing beach chairs and other items that could potentially become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Educational institutions, including the University of Central Florida in Orlando, announced closures for midweek, while Walt Disney World stated it was closely monitoring the hurricane situation but would continue normal operations for the time being.

In western central Florida, all road tolls were suspended. The St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport announced it would cease operations after the final flight on Tuesday. Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, mandated evacuations for all mobile and manufactured homes by Tuesday evening.

In Pinellas County, where St. Petersburg is located, all classes and school activities were canceled as a precaution from Monday through Wednesday. Tampa officials provided free access to city garages for residents seeking to safeguard their vehicles from potential flooding, including electric cars, which must be parked on the third floor or higher in each garage.
The Yucatan state in coastal Mexico has announced the cancellation of classes in most towns and cities along its coastline, following forecasts indicating that Tropical Storm Milton would likely skim the northern region of the state. This decision affects several densely populated Gulf Coast cities, including Progreso, the capital city of Merida, and the protected natural area of Celestun, renowned for its flamingo population.

It has been twenty years since Florida experienced such a rapid succession of storms. In 2004, the state faced an extraordinary event with five storms impacting it within a span of six weeks, among which were three hurricanes that severely affected central Florida.

While Tampa has not experienced a direct hurricane strike in over a century, other areas along Florida's Gulf Coast are still in the process of recovery from recent storms. The Fort Myers region in southwest Florida continues to rebuild after Hurricane Ian, which inflicted $112 billion in damages in 2022. Additionally, Florida's Big Bend region has endured three hurricanes within just 13 months, including Hurricane Helene.

Milton is somewhat unusual as it developed in the far western region and is projected to traverse the entire southern Gulf, as noted by Daniel Brown, a hurricane expert at the center.

"While it is not rare to encounter a hurricane threat in October along Florida's west coast, the formation of a storm in the southwestern Gulf that subsequently impacts Florida is relatively uncommon," Brown explained. He added that most storms forming in October and affecting Florida typically originate from the Caribbean rather than the southwestern Gulf.
